Save On Your Electricity Bill By Cleaning Your Home Appliances

How to save electricity at home: useful tips for cheaper bills! Which appliances consume the most, how to use them in order not to waste energy, and what mistakes to avoid making. Here is a little handbook that will help you to save electricity in your everyday life!

LIGHTING: HOW TO SAVE ELECTRICITY

• Replace incandescent lightbulbs with energy-saving or LEDones.
• When you leave a room, turn off all the lights.
• Don’t leave lights on that you don’t need.

ELECTRICAL DEVICES

• Don’t leave the red light on – it means the device is on standby. Several little red lights are left on through the night or while you are out of the house to use a lot more power than you think.

FRIDGE AND FREEZER

• Avoid opening them too often.
• Make sure that you have closed them properly every time.
• Remember to defrost them regularly and properly clean the coils.
• Check the condition of the seals around the door.
Don’t overfill them.
• Make sure you never put food that is still hot in the fridge or the freezer.
• Never turn down the fridge to below 3°C.
• Defrost the freezer every 4 months.

DISHWASHER

• Use this appliance in the evening and during the night – just like at the weekend, the consumption tariffs are lower.
• Only start the machine when it is full.
• If you need to wash a small number of dishes and pans, choose the most economical program.
• Always use wash cycles at low temperatures.
• Remember that the drying program is not always necessary. Simply open the door and turn off the appliance.
• Carefully clean the filter regularly.
• Keep the pipes and the mechanisms clean using a good descaler.

ELECTRIC OVEN

• Don’t overdo it with the temperature: use only what is necessary and sufficient.
Pre-heating should only be used when it is actually required.
• Avoid using the grill too often.
• Turn off the oven a little before the cooking time finishes and take advantage of the residual heat.
Clean it regularly.

MICROWAVE

• Abandon your assumptions about this type of oven: it uses around half the electricity of a normal electric oven, and needs no pre-heating. It also leaves the properties of the food unaltered and is not bad for your health.

WASHING MACHINE

• Just like for the dishwasher, using it in the evening saves on energy costs.
• The washing machine should only be started when it has a full load.
• Carefully clean the filter regularly.
• Don’t wash at temperatures higher than 60°C.

AIR CONDITIONING

• Activate the dehumidifier function – it consumes less and is very effective.
• Avoid temperatures that are too low – the temperature in your house shouldn’t go below 26°C.
Clean the filters very regularly, at least once a month.
